Advisor Role

The Role of the Advisor 

  • To know each advisee well. 
  • To help advisees learn, understand, and appreciate HMHS rituals and values.  
  • To be a reliable source of comfort, compassion, advocacy, and information for each student, whenever necessary (not just during Advisory time).  
  • To be the student’s academic, future planning, and well-being champion and mentor. 
  • To be the primary liaison between the school, the family, the student’s teachers, and the student.  
  • To represent the staff and advocate for the advisee at IEP, 504 and other meetings about their advisee.   
  • To facilitate or participate in conversations with an advisee and other students and staff as needed to address conflicts or struggles. (Note: Administrator support or participation should be sought with any major conflict or struggle. When in doubt, ask.)  
  • To use team building, group problem solving, student celebrations, Advisory rituals or other collaborative activities to foster a strong sense of community.  
  • To provide a safe space for advisees to engage in challenging, important conversations and to practice empathy, integrity, respect and compassion.  
  • To find pathways for Advisory members to connect with each other in and out of Advisory
