Advisor Role

The Role of the Advisor

To know each advisee well.

To help advisees learn, understand, and appreciate HMHS rituals and values.

To be a reliable source of comfort, compassion, advocacy, and information for each student, whenever necessary (not just during Advisory time).

To be the student’s academic, future planning, and well-being champion and mentor.

To be the primary liaison between the school, the family, the student’s teachers, and the student.

To represent the staff and advocate for the advisee at IEP, 504 and other meetings about their advisee.

To facilitate or participate in conversations with an advisee and other students and staff as needed to address conflicts or struggles. (Note: Administrator support or participation should be sought with any major conflict or struggle. When in doubt, ask.)

To use team building, group problem solving, student celebrations, Advisory rituals or other collaborative activities to foster a strong sense of community.

To provide a safe space for advisees to engage in challenging, important conversations and to practice empathy, integrity, respect and compassion.
