Curriculum

We are using the Everyday Math program.  This is my second year working with the program, but the first year for most of your children.  This program emphasizes a spiral approach to math and offers a variety of strategies to solve math problems.  Games are important component of the program and they provide an enjoyable way to reinforce concepts.

Brand new to fifth graders this year is the Scott Foresman English Language Arts program.   This program provides a comprehensive approach to reading with a core reading book, leveled reader books and spelling, grammar and writing tied directly to each story.  We have completed Unit 1 with a theme of “Challenges” and are now working on Unit 2 which has “Kindness” as a theme.  We enjoy the classroom discussions around each theme.  The program also offers an online component that your child can access from home at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.  Each student has a user name and password and they can go to this site to read stories from the book or have them read to them as well as work on online practice for each unit.

Social Studies focuses on US History and we are about to begin learning about the colonies.  We have just finished learning about Native Americans.

In Science we are in the middle of our Earth Science unit and are learning about rocks and minerals.

New Hampshire Frameworks – Grade Level Expectations

Homework Policies:

Students are expected to take home and finish any assigned daily work that they do not complete in class.  In addition, math and/or spelling are frequently assigned.  It is your child’s responsibility to complete homework and homework assignment sheets are available to them for this purpose.  They do not need to have these signed unless they are not completing homework.

Classroom Procedures:

Our school is on a six day schedule this year.   For our class the schedule is as follows:

Day 1:  Tech Lab              Day 4:  Music

Day 2:  Art                     Day 5:  Health

Day 3:  Library                Day 6:  Phys Ed

Our classroom rules are simple.  Each student is expected to be respectful to adults and each other at all times.  Treat others as you want to be treated.  Be  cooperative and kind.
