COURSE TITLEStatisticsINSTRUCTORTony Yiannakostyiannakos@hnhsd.orgDEPARTMENTMathMEETING TIMESMon - Fri Period 2
COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course is intended as a college level course which gives high school credit as well as credit at River Valley Community College. Prior to taking this course, students should have completed Algebra 1 and Geometry. The students in this class will learn techniques for using statistics to conduct mathematical investigations. Topics may include numerical and graphical descriptive measures, probability, random variables, the normal distribution, sampling theory, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression. The use of technology is required. Students will learn to set up a statistical experiment, read and interpret results, express those results in various forms,, and make decisions about situations based on those results. This course is a hybrid style course, meaning that the material presented will be individualized as much as possible with respect to the proficiency of each student in a particular area of algebra being covered. There will be pretests, post tests, divided classrooms, work in the library and independent work involved. This requires focus and attention by the student. All rules of the school will be rigidly enforced, so that all students can obtain the maximum benefit from this method. You will also have access to materials online, and help will be provided to make it easier for you to access this help.
Mathematics is a difficult subject but not an impossible one. You cannot fall behind on the work, because work that follows is based on knowledge of what went before. If you feel you are not understanding and falling behind, please come for help. I am frequently in school after classes and am more than willing to help you out. We also have resources available. Let me know if you are needing assistance before you fall too far behind.

Grades will consist of a classroom participation component, a homework component, a quiz component, a writing component, a project component and a test component.
HOMEWORK, QUIZZES, & EXAMINATIONSHomework will be given regularly, marked, and returned to the students. It will be corrected in the classroom as time allows, and as necessary. All homework will be graded and become part of the final grade of the course. Each homework assignment is worth ten points. The homework grade will be 25% of the final grade. Homework which is not turned in at the beginning of the period will be considered late. Homework which is not turned in at the beginning of the period will be considered late. It may be turned in at any time before the beginning of the next day's period, earning a maximum grade of 9 out of 10. Homework later than the next day will receive a maximum grade of 8 out of 10, and on the third day late 7 out of 10. Homework more than 3 days late will not be accepted and will receive a grade of 0. Three missing assignments results in automatic detention until the assignments are made up.Quizzes will be given on a regular basis, and will not be announced ahead of time. Examinations will be given at the end of each major section of material and will be announced ahead of time. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. Examinations will be worth 100 points. Quiz grades and other grades will be scored on the basis of 10 points.
The ability to take notes is a critical learning skill taught in this course. Each student is required to have and maintain a notebook, with relevant class material presented written down in it. Any type of note book is acceptable. Notebooks will be collected after each test and will be given a grade based on their content, neatness, and completeness.
ATTENDANCE, TARDINESS, & BEHAVIOR POLICIESAttendance will be taken at the beginning of each period and will be sent immediately to the main office. Students who are not there by the time attendance is taken will be marked absent for the period. Hall passes will only be given during the first and last five minutes of class. Only one student will be given a pass at any one time. Two or more unexcused absences will result in notification of the Office, and your parents. Unexcused absences may result in Attendance Failure for the course. If you are absent due to sickness, assignments are due upon your return. You may find out assignments from home on Teacher Web.All students and teachers are to be treated with respect at all times. The classroom is a place of learning and each student will be given the best opportunity to learn, without interference. Completion of assignments and maximum effort is assumed. I can give extra help when needed. Please make the effort and use that help.No bullying or cyber-bullying will be tolerated.
