An OWL inspired Classroom – OWL (Organic World Langauge)
The OWL method is a language teaching model that focuses on language proficiency through movement, immersion (all in Spanish), and a student driven classroom with individual goals and an emphasis on personal growth. I adopted this method back in 2015 after much frustration at the level of my student’s interpersonal communication skills and listening comprehension after many years teaching in a traditional model. My goal now as a World Language Instructor is to make sure my students are working towards useful communication. I’d like them to be able to listen and speak with native speakers with ease. As a child we learn to speak through listening, reading and constant interaction. As a toddler we speak with mistakes but we speak. My goal is for the students to just speak in Spanish and over time, much like a child does, they will absorb the new language and begin to grow in proficiency. At first they will make mistakes, those mistakes are growth they are not a negative. We’ve all said or heard someone say “I took French/Spanish/German in high school and I can’t speak a word”. This is a phrase I hope to never hear again coming from my students. This teaching method is incredibly interactive and students are expected to give their all during class time, it can be exhausting for students at times but ultimately rewarding when they realize that they can successfully communicate in another language.
Students are graded based on their proficiency growth

IMPORTANT PRINTABLE DOCUMENTS
Parents – Practice work (homework) is listed below for all of my classes.
Spanish 4-5 Practice work: Weekly Practice work – Do 3 different activities from the practice work sheet and record what you did and what you learned. This is due every Friday. Only 2 activities are required on the weeks when a cultural presentations are due.
ALL Spanish classes:
-Students have 3 school days to make up assignments while losing 10 points each day. After 3 days work will not be accepted without staying after and even then will not count for more that 50%
Homework – There will be little to no Homework this year. Students will sometimes be asked to finish an assignment started in class at home. They will also be responsible for completing any projects at home as well. If they miss a day of class they will need to complete the missed assignments outside of class.
Compostions – Students will be writing one composition every 1-2 weeks show casing whatever topics we’ve covered that week. These compositions are a big part of their grade and should be completed without any help from a computer or dictionary. There are generally done during class unless a student is absent. They are graded based on the proficiency level they represent the corresponding grade for that proficiency level depending on the course they are taking.
