Curriculum
Curriculum is aligned with the New Hampshire Frameworks – Grade Level Expectations
Math- This year the second grade as well as all other grades at HES are using Everyday Math This is curriculum developed by The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. This is the first year we have been using this curriculum. It is based on the concept of spiraling of math concepts so that reviewing and introduction of new concepts occurs on a daily basis. Expect a parent letter at the beginning of each new unit.
Literacy- Morning literacy programs use the Literacy Collaborative model developed by Fountas and Pinnell. We use leveled books for guided reading groups. Students also have leveled reading books for practice in their “browsing bags”. We are starting a new multi-sensory phonics program this year called Fundations created by Wilson Reading. This program will enhance our literacy program with systematic drill and practice of sound-letter relatonships and spelling patterns.
Spelling– Zaner-Bloser Spelling. This curriculum explores spelling patterns and words that second graders should know,
Writing- We write in our journals every morning. We also write during our literacy blocks using writing prompts such as Weekend News.
Science- Harcourt Science. We have a science series which is used at all grade levels. In second grade we explore units in the three areas of Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Some units we are exploring are properties of matter, weather, the solar system, dinosaurs, and the ocean. We have done experiments with solids, liquids, and gases. Recently we have made water cycles for our weather unit.
Social Studies- Silver Burdett Ginn- We explore map skills and explore four units: Then and Now, Rules and Laws, the Environment, and All Around The World.
Second Step- This is a social curriculum which helps students problem solve and manage emotions such as anger, sadness, sharing, and getting along with others.
Homework Policy
Homework goes home on Mondays in a folder. There is one spelling assignment. There are Math Links which correspond to the lessons taught that week in math. All homework is due on Friday of each week.
