Hinsdale Elementary School

A MESSAGE FROM

THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Hinsdale Elementary School!  We

are glad you have taken the time to learn about

us and appreciate the opportunity to share a

little about our wonderful learning community.

As principal I believe that my primary responsibility is to maintain Hinsdale Elementary School’s reputation as a nurturing and challenging place for all students, and I mean all students. I help them in any way I can toward maximizing their potential under the watchful eyes of our caring and enthusiastic staff.  In order to meet that goal, I work with the Hinsdale community to provide a challenging curriculum, to increase student achievement,  to ensure effective discipline and a safe environment, to weave technology into the curriculum,  and to maintain pleasant facilities and parent/community involvement.

Hinsdale Elementary School is part of a Pre-K through 12th grade campus located in the heart of the community on the eastern shore of the Connecticut River, close to the Vermont and Massachusetts borders.  We are finishing a complete renovation of the elementary and secondary buildings this year, with a new middle school wing.

Our Pre-School program provides a fun and stimulating learning place for 3, 4, and 5-year old students.  This program provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum where students learn through play and acquire school readiness skills.  Our K-5 students enter a solid core curriculum:

v     K-2  Reading and Writing: Fundations (Wilson Reading) and the Literacy Collaborative (Fountas and Pinnell). Reading Recovery  instruction (1:1) and Fast ForWord technology provide outstanding support for struggling readers.

v     3-5   Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling:  Reading Street (Pearson/Scott Foresman)

v     K-5  Mathematics: Everyday Math (University of Chicago)

v     K-5 Science: Harcourt Science

v     K-2 Social Studies: People and Places ( Silver Burdett Ginn)

v     3-5 Social Studies: MacmiIllan McGraw Hill

v     K-5 Art, General Music, Library Studies, and Physical Education for all students

v     Second Step: Violence prevention program, building empathy and problem solving skills

v     Community:  Monthly community meetings with all students and staff

to celebrate achievement and performance

v     Student Support:  special education, Title I, counseling, and social work for students and families

v     Parents: We cannot do it alone.  Please take the time to spend 15-30 minutes per day to read to your child, or listen to him or her read.  Provide a quiet space and desk for his/her homework, and praise work well done.  This is a great investment – I promise!

v     After School Program (ASP) funded by a federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.

We pride ourselves on our communication with parents and the community at large, and that always leaves room for improvement.  Do not hesitate to contact me at your convenience.  I would be delighted to offer you a tour of our newly renovated school.  I also welcome a telephone call or e-mail message, and will do my best to answer any questions you may have.  Get involved!  We have a very active PTA and a wonderful volunteer program.  Your child will thrive with us in Hinsdale!
