Curriculum
We are currently implementing a new Language Arts series called Reading Street. We have finished the first unit about Dollars and Sense. The next units will be Smart Solutions, People and Nature, One of a Kind, Cultures, and Freedom. In Language we have discussed questions, statements, commands, exclamations, compound sentences and punctuation. Included in the next unit will be common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, and possessive nouns. Then we move on to action and linking verbs, main verbs and helping verbs, subject verb agreement, tenses, and irregular verbs.
In math we are implementing our third year of Everyday Mathematics. We will cover number and numeration, operations and computation, data and chance, measurement and reference frames, geometry and patterns functions and algebra throughout the year.

| Homework – Monday thru Thursday the students will have an assignment. Please sign the Planner (Assignment Book) weekly. Also include the book your child is reading. |
§ Math worksheet (Usually a Home Link reviewing what we have done in school.)
§ Read 15 minutes
§ Study Spelling
If the math worksheet is taking your child longer than 30 minutes, or seems to be frustrated, please send in a note with the assignment, and I will help them complete it at school. I still have Student Reference Books available. These are a 2004 edition, so the pages will not always correlate with the pages stated on the Home Link, but they contain the same information. The last Home Link in the unit contains a preview for the upcoming math unit. The answers to the Home Links are on the last page of the newsletter. SSSHHHH! Don’t tell the kids! J
| Reading – We are well on our way through the first unit of our new reading series called Reading Street. The first unit deals with Dollar Sense and the second is Smart Solutions. I have been sending home a letter called The Family Times, which explains the lessons for the week, the vocabulary and the students also write their spelling words. At the end of the week there is an assessment to check comprehension and vocabulary. | |||||||||||
| Spelling – There are 15 Spelling works each week, with 5 bonus words. The bonus words count as 2 extra points, but the students are not penalized if they get them wrong. The spelling follows predictable patterns like plurals, or endings, or long vowels. We have the Spelling test on Friday. | |||||||||||
| Language – In our Grammar and Writing books we are beginning to learn parts of speech, and parts of sentences. We are also learning different “Thinking Maps”. Ask your child about a “Double Bubble Map” or a “Flow Map”! We use these in all subject areas. We are currently finishing a Flow Map about the water cycle. | |||||||||||
| Math – We are in the second year of Everyday Math. As we complete the first unit, we have reviewed money, telling time, place value and computation. Games are a very important component of Everyday Math. Some games that we have learned so far are Less Than You, Addition Top It, and Beat the Calculator. These games are listed in the back of the Student Reference Book, and can be played with a regular deck of playing cards. (Your child should have brought home a desk of cards last week. If you did not get them, please let me know.) | |||||||||||
| Science – For the first half of the quarter we are studying Weather. We will begin working on our weather reports in the upcoming weeks. Please see the attached paper about the Weather Report. | |||||||||||
| Social Studies – The second half of the first quarter will be spent on Social Studies. The first unit is about our communities and the communities that we belong to. | |||||||||||
| Friday Folders – The green Friday Folders are sent home on Friday’s. Included in the Friday Folders are your child’s corrected assignments and any notices that need to go home. Please read the comment I have made on the last page and return it to school on Monday. It is very important that you sign the Friday Folder, so I know you have reviewed the work your child has completed over the week. | |||||||||||
Grading – This will be the first year your child will
receive letter grades. They will receive letter grades in Reading, Math,
Language and Spelling. Social Studies and Science will receive a check, check
plus or check minus. Graded work will be sent home in the Friday Folder. Any
paper (except tests) graded below an 80 may be corrected and resubmitted for a
better grade.
